On #AlpineLinux & #postmarketos , I was fed up with the janky way that xdg autostart is used to run things on login, so I wrote a brand new user service supervisor, called superd. It's like systemd --user but without all of the rest of systemd.
Spring is almost here, in the northern hemisphere, and that means it is time for another monthly service pack update for postmarketOS v21.12! This update brings a few bug fixes and package upgrades from edge to the stable release.
Booting ARM Linux the standard way

PSA: The Tow-Boot project (https://tow-boot.org) have just put out their 4th release, officially supporting the @PINE64 #PinePhone and #PinePhonePro: https://github.com/Tow-Boot/Tow-Boot/releases/tag/release-2021.10-004
If you're wondering what EBBR is: https://arm-software.github.io/ebbr/index.html#document-chapter2-uefi. Basically, Tow-Boot delivers UEFI on ARM and thus makes work for distributions a lot easier.
Software may be immaterial, but it runs on hardware and determines its energy consumption. Making software energy efficient is crucial. Let's build energy-efficient Free Software together!
had to explain RSS to two fellow gen z-ers
me: its kind of like subscribing for updates on a website, before "following" was a thing.
them: oh, is that something new?
me: actually closed "following" on walled gardens, like twitter, kind of killed out a lot of RSS for our generation, but there are people who still use it and find it handy
them: wait, so i don't need to make an account?
me: no.
It is refreshing and motivating to listen to @ollieparanoid reminding us of the "what" and the "why" of being involved with #linux on #mobile. It is easy to get lost in technicalities, bugs, performance issues, lack of applications and miss the point.
Success! I got #postmarketOS booting using #GRUB thanks to the #Tow-Boot (U-Boot) UEFI implementation on my #PinePhonePro! And that with Tow-Boot installed to the #SPI!
Nothing I can take a picture off since I doubt GRUB will be able to use the display at the moment, but still very cool!

Linux Mobile vs. The Social Dilemma
As FOSS on mobile community, let's do our part to fix the many negative effects of social media and its hostile design patterns. We could become the prime example of how to treat users with respect. To not only give them control over their phone, but also over their attention. From design choices in the operating systems and apps to the platforms we choose to communicate about development.

On latest @postmarketOS edge with @plasmamobile
virtual keyboard does not prompt.
Workaround is to get access to a terminal session, either with ssh or TTYescape and add:
[Wayland]
InputMethod=/usr/share/applications/com.github.maliit.keyboard.desktop
into /etc/xdg/kwinrc.
Thanks to @bshah
tested out @kdecommunity #plasmamobile briefly on the OnePlus 6, seems to be a few animation issues(?) but this is smooooooth. full disclosure i locked the GPU to its max freq for these tests (although i don't think that made a huge difference)
RT @biktorgj
You know what's cooler than sending an sms to @thepine64 #PinePhone #modem and getting a response? Well, calling it of course!
...and yes, using a sample from #PersonOfInterest was absolutely necessary ;)
Coming soon-ish (tm)
There's now a graphical installer for #towboot on the #PinephonePro
https://spacepub.space/w/s9qs9QoKo4PJdiy1YNPRKr
It works pretty great :)
so someone uploaded a .apk package to the main #postmarketOS, with instructions to use the "--allow-untrusted" flag to install it. That flag disables package signing in apk, which is *really* bad idea.
Turns out, this package that was posted seems like it was almost certainly malware.

@thepine64 PineNote running @postmarketOS sway with Linux 5.17-rc2 for the first time!
huge shout out to Samuel Holland and pgwipeout for all the kernel development that made this possible!
